What is Building Healthy Families?

Building Healthy Families is a home visitation program that provides parent education, family support, early intervention services and serves as a link to health care services

Who is eligible?

Building Healthy Families is available to Marshall County expectant parents and parents with children birth to age 5 years who voluntarily enroll.

Building Healthy Families, Prenatal ServicesWhat are the Prenatal Services?

Prenatal care in Marshall County is available through Marshalltown Obstetrics and Gynecology or Primary Health Care.

Prenatal home visits by a Child Development Specialist with the Building Healthy Families program are available. Child Development Specialists are certified parent educators with the Parents as Teachers National Center. They use this curriculum to discuss what to expect during your pregnancy and how to prepare for the arrival of your baby.

Building Healthy Families, Prenatal ServicesWhat are the Postnatal Services?

Following delivery at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center, you can receive a home visit from a registered nurse from Home Care Plus. The nurse will assess the current health of both you and your baby. They will also reinforce teaching done at the hospital, teach/ assist with breastfeeding, answer questions and provide information and referrals.

Family Support: A Child Development Specialist with Building Healthy Families will contact you two weeks after your delivery. A time will be arranged to meet with you and your baby at your home. The Child Development Specialist will bring a free gift and will provide information on the on-going services that are provided.

Parent Education: For families who wish on-going services, a Child Development Specialist will schedule regular home visits. These visits will help you understand what to expect as your child grows and will provide family support and referrals to needed services.
